"Happy Valentine's Day!" or "Happy Valentines' Day!"

"Happy Valentine __ Day"is posted and is said by many people around me without "'s", especially Thais. Because we don't feel comfortable having "s" sound, we keep it silent. Not only "'s", I mean anything that ends with "s", including objects with more than one object or plural noun.
หลายๆคนรอบๆตัวเตื้องจะลืมตัว 's หลังวาเลนไทน์ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเวลาพูดหรือเขียน โดยเฉพาะคนไทยนี่แหละคะ เพราะว่าเราไม่ค่อยจะชอบออกเสียง เอส กันสักเท่าไหร่ ไม่ใช่แค่ 's เท่านั้นหรอกคะ รวมไปถึงการเติม s ข้างหลังของที่มากกว่า 1 ที่ต้องเติม เอส ไปด้วย

Now, I will talk about "Apostrophe s"
คราวนี้เรามาพูดถึงเรื่องตัวนี้ 's หรือ "apostrophe s" ตัวแสดงความเป็นเจ้าของ กันดีกว่านะคะ


If you want to make a day that belongs to all other sweethearts in the world, it becomes plural possessive. Then you would call it, Valentines' Day (begin with the plural word valentines, and then add the apostrophe to show possession to the plural word). We do not need to add apostrophe s ('s) after plural word.
ถ้าต้องการจะทำวัที่พิเศษให้เป็นของคนที่คุณรักทั่วๆไป ก็ให้ใช้ Valentines' Day นะคะ ถ้าสำหรับหลายๆคนมันก็จะกลายเป็น s อยู่หลังวาเลนไทน์คะ ซึ่งพอมันกลายเป็นพหูพจน์แล้วเนี่ย เราไม่ต้องเติม 's ซ้ำอีกที เราแค่เติมลูกน้ำไปอย่างเดียวพอ

If you have a special day set aside just for your own valentine, then by all means, call it Valentine's Day. And to be even clearer, you should specify that it is "St.Valentine's Day." But IF you and your friends are having a celebration for each of your valentines, then you need to call it "Valentines' Day." and that can even include St. Valentine, too.



The rules for the apostrophe are straightforward and clear. Decide whether or not your initial term should be singular or plural. Then place the apostrophe. The confusion comes in because some words are singular and end in an s (like Jones), while some words are plural and don't end in an s (like children).







That's why the day to celebrate all the mothers is spelled "Mothers' Day", not "Mother's Day."
ก็จะเหมือนกับวันแม่นะคะ วันแม่แห่งชาติ ก็จะเป็น Happy Mothers' Day ไม่ใช่ Mother's Day.
