Top 10 English Errors my Students Make (PART 3)

Hello and welcome to my "Part 3" on this topic, "Top 10 English Errors my Students Make". Let me review what I have talked about on the first & second part.

สวัสดีและยินดีต้อนรับสู่บทความตอนที่ 3 ที่เตื้องได้พูดถึงเรื่องข้อผิดพลาดในการใช้ภาษาอังกฤษของนักเรียนเตื้องนะคะ ก่อนอื่นมาดูกันหน่อยดีกว่าว่าเตื้องได้พูดถึงอะไรไปบ้างแล้วนะคะ 

PART 1
1. Not adding “-s” to third person singular in the present simple. 

ไม่ยอมเติม “s” กันหลังกิริยา เมื่อประธานเป็นบุคคลที่ 3 เอกพจน์ ในเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดในปัจจุบัน     

2. Using “verb to be or is, am,are” with “verb”, this means that we use double verbs in a sentence.

ใช้กิริยาแท้ซ้ำกัน 2 ครั้ง โดยมีทั้ง “verb to be” หรือ “is, am, are”  ซึ่งก็เป็นกิริยาแท้ด้วยเหมือนกัน มาอยู่กับกิริยาแท้ช่องที่ 1 อีกตัวหนึ่งด้วยกันในหนึ่งประโยค

PART 2
3. Using "verb to do" or "do/does/did" with "v.ing" which means that you got mixed up with Simple Tense and Continuous Tense

การใช้คำกิริยา “verb to do” หรือ "do/does/did" กับ กิริยาที่ลงท้ายด้วย -ing ซึ่งหมายความว่าคุณกำลังสับสนใช้ปนกันไปหมดกับการใช้ tense ระหว่าง "Simple Tense" และ "Continuous Tense"

4. Adjective with “-d” and "-ing" to describe feelings and things. Most of my students got mixed up. 

การใช้คำคุณศัพท์ที่ลงท้ายด้วย “-d” และ "-ing" เพื่อที่จะอธิบายถึงความรู้สึกและสิ่งต่างๆ นักเรียนส่วนใหญ่ของเตื้องก็จะใช้มันมั่วไปหมดสลับไปสลับมา

  

I then read back from the first to the forth and think that this may make you feel bored. So, I will write about the words that my students and some Thais often use incorrectly. Let's begin!

เตื้องก็ลองกลับมาอ่านจากข้อ 1-4 อีกครั้งนะคะ แล้วก็คิดว่า ที่เขียนๆไปเนี่ย มันน่าเบื่อเหมือนกันนะเนี่ย เอาเป็นว่า... คราวนี้เตื้องจะเอาเรื่องคำที่นักเรียนของเตื้องและก็คนไทยบางคนใช้ผิดกันบ่อยมาพูดกันละกันนะคะ เริ่มเลยดีกว่า

5. in trend "อินเทรนด์" = trendy, fashionable

Most of my students use this word, "in trend", as they mean to say "trendy" or "fashionable". Actually, this word is quite popular in Thailand these days. 

นักเรียนส่วนใหญ่ของเตื้องจะใช้คำว่า "in trend" ซึ่งจริงๆ ความหมายก็คือ ทันสมัย หรือ trendy ไม่ก็ fashionable นี่แหละคะ จริงๆแล้วมันก็ค่อนข้างจะฮิตในเมืองไทยนะคะ

Example

Incorrect:     You won't be in trend if you don't know GangNam Style.

Correct:       You won't be a trendy person if you don't know GangNam Style.

ถ้าพูดเป็นไทยก็คงจะประมาณนี้คะ "คุณจะไม่อินเทรนด์เลยนะ ถ้าคุณไม่รู้จักเพลงกังนัมสไตล์"

I then think that "in trend" may come from the mixture of "in" and "trend" as those Thais who apply "in trend" mean to say something about fashion or current style.

เตื้องคิดว่าคำว่า "in trend" เนี่ยนะคะ อาจจะมาจากการผสมคำว่า "in" และ "trend" เพราะว่าคนที่ใช้คำว่าอินเทรนด์เนี่ย ก็ตั้งใจจะจะสื่อถึง ความทันสมัย นี่แหละคะ

a) in (adj.) = (informal) currently fashionable 

ความหมายแบบไม่ใช้เป็นทางการ

Example: The in thing to wear this season.

ทันสมัย เช่น สิ่งที่ใส่แล้วทันสมัย

the thing (n.) = สี่ง (ของ)

in (adj.) = ทันสมัย 

พอ "in" มาขยาย "สิ่ง (ของ)" เราก็ต้องเอามาวางไว้ด้านหน้า thing เพื่อที่จะแปลออกมาให้ได้ว่า สิ่งที่ทำแล้วทันสมัย 

b) trend (n.) = currently style 
Example: The latest trend in fashion.

เช่น แบบที่ทันสมัยที่สุดในวงการแฟชั่น

ซึ่ง trend มีหน้าที่เป็น noun ในที่นี้นะคะ แปลว่า แบบหรือสไตล์ในปัจจุบัน

Now, let's have it clear here so we won't use it incorrectly when we speak English.

เอาละคะ หวังว่าคงจะพอทำความเข้าใจกันไปได้บ้างแล้วนะคะ ความนี้จะได้เอาไปพูดเป็นอังกฤษไม่ผิดกันนะคะ
