Episode 2: Learning from others (Hong Kong)

Last article, I have briefly told you about my four trips (South Korea, Hong Kong, China, and Japan) in January, 2013. In South Korea, we have learnt about "Keep the Room Clean!".
บทความที่แล้วเตื้องได้พูดถึงเรื่องการเดินทาง 4 ประเทศ (เกาหลีใต้ ฮ่องกง จีน และ ญี่ปุ่น) ในเดือนมกราคม 2556 ไปแล้วนะคะ ที่เกาหลีใต้ เราก็ได้เรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับคำว่า กรุณารักษาความสะอาดไปแล้วนะคะ

Now, I will move on to the trip in Hong Kong.
เอาละคะ เตื้องจะพูดถึงตอนที่ไปเที่ยวฮ่องกงบ้างละนะคะ

One of the most popular questions about Hong Kong is that "Do people in Hong Kong speak English?". As Hong Kong's role as former British colony, people often arrive to Hong Kong with high expectations about the level of English. However, some people may forget that it isn't that easy to get all things done suddenly, especially when it deals with people and changes.
คำถามยอดฮิตเกี่ยวกับฮ่องกงเลยนะคะ ก็คือ คนที่ฮ่องกงพูดภาษาอังกฤษกันได้มั้ย เพราะว่าฮ่องกงเป็นเมืองขึ้นของประเทศอังกฤษ คนที่ไปเที่ยวที่ฮ่องกงก็จะคาดหวังว่าภาษาอังกฤษที่นั่นจะต้องดีแน่ๆเลย อย่างไรก็ตามนะคะ บางคนคงอาจจะลืมไปนิดนึงว่า จะให้อะไรมันเปลี่ยนปุ๊บปั๊บแบบที่มันควรจะเป็นมันไม่ได้ง่ายเลยทีเดียว โดยเฉพาะถ้ามันเกี่ยวข้องกับคนและการเปลี่ยนแปลง

English and Chinese are the official languages in Hong Kong so all official signs and announcements are in both languages. All government officials, including police officers and immigration officials are required to have a communicative level of English. Yet, they are not influent in English like a native speaker.
ภาษาอังกฤษกับภาษาจีนเป็นภาษาทางการที่ใช้กันในฮ่องกง เพราะอย่างนี้นะคะ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นป้ายหรือบอกประกาศอะไรที่เป็นทางการ เค้าก็จะใช้เป็นสองภาษานี้แหละคะเป็นหลัก พวกราชการทั้งหลายรวมถึง ตำรวจ และ เจ้าหน้าที่ตรวจคนเข้าเมืองด้วยนะคะ ก็จำเป็นต้องพูดภาษาอังกฤษได้ระดับนึง แต่ก็ยังคงไม่พูดเหมือนเจ้าของภาษาหรอกนะคะ

Alright! One that I pick from Hong Kong is "Go Away!"
เอาละ มาเริ่มกันเลยดีกว่านะคะ เริ่มจากที่ไปเอามาจากประเทศฮ่องกงก็คือ "Go Away" 

Once I arrived to Hong Kong International Airport, I was lining up in front of the immigration counter. I heard someone said "Go Away!" to another passenger. He was one of the immigration officials there telling a passenger who overstepped the waiting line. She supposed to be behind the waiting line but I guess she didn't know what to do so she just followed the one in front of her which was too close.
พอเตื้องไปถึงที่ท่าอากาศยานฮ่องกง เตื้องก็ไปต่อแถวเพื่อตรวจคนเข้าเมือง ตอนที่รออยู่ก็ได้ยินเสียงดังมาว่า "Go Away!" กับผู้โดยสารคนนึง ก็คือเจ้าหน้าที่ตรวจคนเข้าเมืองนั่นแหละคะ กำลังบอกผู้โดยสารที่ยืนล้ำเส้นที่ให้ยืนรอ คือจริงๆผู้โดยสารควรจะยืนหลังเส้นให้ยืนรอ แต่คิดว่าเค้าคงทำตัวไม่ถูกไรงี้ ก็เลยเดินๆตามคนข้างหน้าไปซะเลย แบบชิดกันเลยทีเดียว

I believe that that immigration official meant to say "Please Step Back!".
ในกรณีนี้ เตื้องว่าเค้าน่าจะตั้งใจบอกว่า "Please Step Back" นะคะ

Next question is that "What's wrong with it?"
คำถามต่อไปก็คือ แล้วมันผิดยังไง?




GO AWAY (Idiom) =  to leave in a period of time
อารมณ์ประมาณว่า ไปไกลๆ ถ้าพูดกับสถานการณ์แบบนี้นะคะ ซึ่งหยาบคายนิดนึง


STEP BACK (Idiom) =  to move back from someone or something
อันนี้ก็ประมาณว่า ให้ถอยหลังไปหน่อยคะ 




PLEASE STEP BACK!
กรุณาถอยไปหน่อยนะครับ

or

PLEASE STAND BEHIND THE WAITING LINE!
กรุณายืนรอหลังเส้นด้วยครับ


I would prefer the last one "Please stand behind the waiting line!
เตื้องว่าแบบหลังน่าจะดีกว่านะคะ กรุณายืนรอหลังเส้นด้วยครับ




Now, remember this one of language manners!
